This was what I made today, whilst sitting on the lounge, keeping my sick children company. I knew we were in for yet another day at home (6 days in a row now, with one quick dash out, into the real world, to pick up antibiotics) and high temps, as my little one came down sick yesterday after telling me solemnly, 'I not OK today, Mama'.
I thought I had better prepare myself a little craft to keep my hands busy whilst the girls slept or lounged beside me. The girls are usually in-my-shadow on an average day, but when they are sick, they are extra clingy and don't let me out of their sight. It is just easier if I give up any hope of getting housework done and just sit with them all day. Needless to say, we have spent a lot of time this week, snuggled up on the lounge. In all this down-time, if I could knit, I probably could have knitted a king-sized blanket this week!
Anyway, last night I cut out 12 circles of fabric, ironed them and sent Nick out to buy a packet of hair elastics. What a great husband, he totally gets my need to craft. Lucky for him, this was one of my more simple requests. Just don't ever ask him about The Great 8-hour Quest to Find Japanese Tissue Paper that spanned the entire metropolitan area of Sydney. Yikes! What a way to test {and prove} his love!

Once I got started today, they were so quick and easy to make, as all the prep work was done last night. It also helped that we had settled in to watch 'Bedknobs and Broomsticks' - a nice, long, new (to the girls) movie. They both had me in stitches with all their questions and commentary (neither of them stopped talking once through the entire film) and of course, were fascinated by the flying bed, the witch and her attempts at flying on her broomstick and the dancing shoes.
Making yo-yo's couldn't be easier - they are a great project for beginners. There is an excellent tutorial over at Heather Bailey. I simply did a running stitch around each circle, pulled tight, then stitched on the button and the elastic, before tying a hidden knot under the button to finish. Soon I had a lovely, colourful pile of pretty yo-yo's;

Elastic was added and colours mixed and matched...

I made 3 sets of four and boxed them up in single-cupcake boxes;

Now we have some sweet little Christmas gifts for Livvie's friends at pre-school.

Oh they are so sweet - what a great idea! I've never thought to use yo-yo's for hair ties. I'm going to make a couple for Miss S for her Christmas stocking :)
Oh these are cute great idea for my nieces and I have some hair ties already from another crafty project.
