My girls have been in dire need of some new Art Smocks. They are currently using old hand-me-down smocks from their teenage cousins. You can imagine what sort of state they are in, considering all the painting and pasting we do in our house, let alone what they were used for in their previous life! They were very cute and have served us well, but it was time for some new ones;

I really love reversible patterns (it seems like less sewing and you get two-in-one!) so I used the excellent pattern and tutorial for a Reversible Smock at Homespun Threads (click on the link for free sewing patterns and craft activities galore!).Yet again, in lieu of having a printer, I traced the pattern from my computer screen onto butcher's paper, at an enlarged size.
Once I had cut out the above smock for my 4 year old, I cut off the seam allowances and used the smaller version to make another one for my younger daughter;
I really like the narrower straps on the smaller one. I was tempted to buy some oilcloth, but instead decided to use larger pieces of {busy} cotton fabric from my stash. They both tie up at the back with ribbon, which for some reason, I forgot to take any pics of. May have had something to do with the weather...
We are in the middle of a heat wave in Sydney. Nick checked the temperature outside at 4pm today and it was 41 C (105.8 F) ....in the shade!!!! The temperature of the pool was 32 C (89.6F) which actually felt refreshing. The worst part is the humidity... yuck!
We spent the entire day indoors, with the girls watching Snow White & The Seven Dwarves for the first time whilst Nick fielded their non-stop questions and commentary. I did my sewing at the dining room table with some little 'helpers' (I use this term loosely!) intervening along the way, to steal my ribbon and make 'scary sleeping masks' for the whole family.
We are expecting another hot day tomorrow and then a southerly should blow in. Thank goodness! It's 8.30pm now and time for another swim to cool down before bed...

100 degrees Farenheit?!! Wow, quite a difference from this side of the world - it was 10 degrees F this AM! Those smocks are adorable and the choo choo train hangers - love it!
yes we agree, don't like that humidity! We have been inside also, trying to keep cool. Had to laugh because our pool feels warm too. Went out for a scooter at 8am and had to leave it was way too hot.oh well, lucky we have some aircon. have a great sunday. You are getting lots of sewing done, my machine has cobwebs I think.
