Commonsense Cookery Book - Pikelets

Mum, you will be happy to know I have found my copy (printed in 1970) and it's still as good as ever... I made these Pikelets on the weekend, and the Cauliflower Au Gratin to go with our Sunday dinner.

The Commonsense Cookery Book was originally compiled by the NSW Public School Cookery Teacher's Association and includes all the basics, like how to boil an egg, make a cheese sauce, grill chops etc.

It also has hundreds of recipes in chapters including Breakfast Cookery, Stocks & Soups, Meat & Poultry, Salads & Salad Dressings, Savoury Dishes, Milk Puddings, Summer Puddings, Pastry, Scone & Loaf Mixtures and my favourite, Sweets & Confectionery. There's even a chapter named, 'Dishes Suitable for Convalescents, The Aged and Children'. How very old fashioned!

I have just discovered that The ABC shop now sells a hardcopy Collector's Edition of the Commonsense Cookery Book. I will be trying more recipes from the book for our evening meals but what I am most excited about is that I've found something for our next special treat... a handwritten copy of Ma's Trifle recipe, sandwiched between the pages!

My mother also had that book. She worked in a library when it was released and ordered on for herself. It is a much loved memeber of the family and when they priented the one now in ABC shops we were all gifted one for Christmeas
