Since I haven't used my sewing machine for 3 whole months now, I thought I would show you what I was working on before we found out we are having a baby (!) and before the morning sickness kicked in...
I decided to create a little business to work on from home;

whimsy and wood brings together two of my passions ~ combining the old with the new. Beautiful vintage wooden furniture paired with new, modern yet whimsical coverings, each lovingly handmade by me.
For the past five years, I have taken great delight in creating special spaces and nurturing nooks in our home for our little family, and with whimsy and wood, I wanted to share the cosy comforts I so love to make.
It was nice, but not so inviting. I created a patchwork chair pad to make it even more charming;
I then discovered the wonders of High Density Foam and with specific make-overs in mind (ie. I had a garage-full of furniture I had been sourcing for the two months prior), I had 10 pieces cut to size.
High Density Foam is perfect for my furniture, as each piece now not only looks and feels beautiful, but is incredibly comfortable for your tushie too!

I was very excited to work on this beautiful mahogany sloping Stool...
Although it was originally a Piano stool, I have visions of this one being used beneath an old Singer sewing machine.
I also found great delight in giving this plain kitchen stool a make-over;
It was quite industrial looking before... but is decidedly sweeter now;
And my favourite... the Children's Nursery Rhymes Chairs;
Nick could hardly believe how much fun I had with the sander, bringing these to life. I bet he never imagined I would ask for power tools for Mothers Day!
There are a few more pieces I have made, which I haven't taken photos of yet. I am aiming to have a market stall in Sydney in the coming months so I can sell the pieces I have made to date. I will also be selling individual patchwork chair pads, so you can dress-up your own furniture at home!
Having a baby definitely shifts your perspective and focus (and pace!), but I'd still love to continue making creative and unique pieces like these. Hmm... just how to fit it all in, amidst the exhaustion and happy delirium of having a baby (I honestly still can't believe it... but those little kicks and wiggles are definitely making it seem more real!). Anyway, this is where I am at with my little business...

Beautiful work!!! AND many congrats on your upcoming arrival. Glad to hear you are feeling well!ccengu
The chairs look gorgeous and what a great idea for business. That juggling act is so tricky - family, income, juggling a crafty passion. I hope it is ALL wonderful.
What a fantastic idea for a home business. One-of-a-kind bespoke pieces of furniture, lovingly given new life by a talented lady, as comfortable behind an orbital sander as a sewing machine :).
Never know, I might be one of your customers - we are moving to Sydney in August 2013!
All the best with the creativity and the pregnancy - hope it's going well and that you have some energy.
Rachel :)
Margaret, your creations are devine! I knew that you were talented but you keep increasing the complexity & loveliness :-)
