(Livvie, Kindergarten 2012)
I feel we have been really lucky with Livvie's school - we really couldn't have found a more welcoming, community-minded school.
We had a taste of the personal focus last year, on Livvie first day of Kindergarten. As we walked through the school gates for the first time, we were greeted by the school Principal - by name; ''Hi Nick! Welcome Margaret!'. We had only met him once before - at Livvie's enrolment inviterview. He even remembered Elly - and pronounced her {real} name correctly. And it wasn't only us, he remembered the names of ALL the parents and their children. It was quite amazing (for a school with 300 children!).
Throughout the year, we have been pleasantly surprised by the 'spirit' of the school - both the teaching staff and the families. When Ollie was born, Livvie's Kindergarten teacher offered to take her too and from school each day. Many parents offered to baby-sit my children if needed, and we received many cooked meals and baked treats, which really helped in those early weeks.
At the end of last year, Livvie received a Christmas goody bag from her teacher. It included a mug, some pencils, a bookmark, some lollies and chocolates and a disc of photos called 'Kinder Memories'.
Her teacher had taken the time to take some pictures during the year - many of the whole class (on excursions and at special events like the athletics carnival, school masses etc) and a collection of individual photos in the classroom throughout the year;

What a lovely gift!
I won't share all of them here, but I just love having these glimpses of her, enjoying her days at 'Big School' ( And she still calls it that - which only serves to indicate just how small she still is!)
Here she is, this morning, ready for her first day of Year 1;
Note the lace-up shoes. Despite there being nothing wrong with her Mary Janes of last year (neither too small, nor damaged in any way).
Now that she can tie her own laces, it was important to her to wear 'Big Shoes' to 'Big School'.
Our Big Girl admitted she had some 'first day jitters' this morning, but I can't wait to pick her up this afternoon and hear all about her day! And I wonder what the year ahead has in store for her...
(and I do hope to receive another disc... of her 'Year 1 Memories')

Ahh big school. I hope it was a positive day Livinia and your teacher this year will help you develop your love of learning! I think the dvds of photos are a nice touch, good idea and yes they will normally get one each year. That is what the "Christian" and most private schools are good at I feel, creating a close knit community , Principal knowing everyone personally and teachers giving updates via a weekly photo blog or email. I think the Catholic education Board does do a good job at setting these standards for their schools, this is such an important component of schooling/society don't you think? I am so happy that your school is delivering high above expectation. Hooray I say, well done NSW too for keeping the standards high.
